Last Saturday, I went out for a spin with a group of eight — a 3.5-hour cycle from Tralee to Killorglin, around Caragh Lake, and back home again.
It was one of those days that reminded me why I love training.
The time flew by, the conversations were great, and the effort… well, it didn’t even feel like effort.
But when I looked at the data after, I realised something interesting:
👉 I had worked harder than I do when I train on my own.
And yet, it felt easier.
That’s the power of training in a group.
Why Group Training Works
When you train with others, a few important things happen:
✅ You push harder — without even realising it.
You don’t want to drop off the pace, and the energy of the group lifts your effort naturally.
✅ The time flies.
When you’re chatting, laughing, or just sharing the challenge with others, the minutes disappear.
✅ You feed off each other’s energy.
Motivation becomes contagious. On the days you’re struggling, someone else lifts you — and vice versa.
✅ You enjoy it more.
Because training becomes social, not just physical.
The Part Most People Miss
Now, I know a lot of people reading this will think:
“I’d love that, but I’m not comfortable in a group.”
And I get that.
Since Covid, many of us have become used to doing things alone — working from home, walking alone, training alone. It feels safe and comfortable.
But the truth is, we need social interaction more than we realise. It’s not just good for our fitness — it’s good for our mental health, our confidence, and our happiness.
And often, it’s only when you experience it again that you realise how much you were missing it.
Why Evolution Is Different
At Evolution Fitness Tralee, we keep our groups small — deliberately.
You get plenty of one-to-one coaching and attention, but you also get that social connection that makes training more fun and sustainable.
You don’t have to be outgoing. You don’t have to be the fittest person in the room. You just have to show up.
And what happens is simple — you’ll start to look forward to it, not just for the training, but for the people you train with.
Your Turn
If you’ve been struggling for motivation, feeling isolated, or just finding it hard to get going, maybe what you need isn’t more discipline — maybe it’s more connection.
Find your group.
Start showing up.
And rediscover how good exercise can feel when you’re not doing it alone.
