We all face moments where fear kicks in.
Maybe for you it’s walking into a gym for the first time.
Maybe it’s signing up for a class where you don’t know anyone.
Or maybe it’s putting your name down for an event that feels just outside your reach.
For me, that moment came this past weekend at the Lost Sheep Triathlon.
All week I was glued to the weather forecast — and it was grim. Rain, wind, dangerous bike conditions. My brain went into overdrive.
👉 “Maybe I shouldn’t go… I have a young daughter at home now.”
👉 “The course is too dangerous.”
👉 “I’m not ready — what if I fail?”
I even texted friends looking for an excuse. My body created phantom aches and pains just to justify backing out.
But here’s the truth: all that noise wasn’t about the weather. It wasn’t about my safety. It was fear of putting myself out there. Fear of being seen.
And I’ll be honest — even as a gym owner, even as someone who is fit, my brain still tries to protect me by saying “don’t do it.”
But I showed up. I raced. The weather was shocking, and yes, parts of the bike course were sketchy — but I took my time, trusted my training, and crossed the finish line. And it was worth every second.
Why This Matters for You
You don’t need to be doing a triathlon to feel this way.
- If you’re someone who’s overweight and thinking about joining a gym, that fear you feel? That’s normal.
- If you’re a regular gym-goer but you’re coasting along doing the same thing, stepping into a new challenge will bring those same doubts.
Your brain will come up with every excuse:
❌ “It’s not the right time.”
❌ “I’ll start when I’m fitter.”
❌ “I don’t want to look silly.”
But here’s the thing: those excuses are just noise.
They’re fear disguised as logic.
Taking the First Step
The only way to quiet that noise is action.
✔️ Show up for the class.
✔️ Go for the run.
✔️ Walk into the gym and say hello.
You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to be the fittest person in the room. You just have to start.
And once you do, just like me on Saturday, you’ll realise — you were always capable.
Your Turn
Whether you’re taking your very first step into fitness, or you’re ready to challenge yourself with something new, the fear and excuses will always show up.
But they don’t get to decide. You do.
