Gym Tralee Guide: Why December Feels So Hard — And How to Stop the Slide Before January

David from Evolution Gym Tralee

I’m going to be honest with you — I’m tired right now.

Really tired.

It’s December 8th and motivation is nowhere to be found. My usual rhythm feels off, my brain is foggy, and even the simple tasks feel harder than they should. And if you’ve been feeling something similar, I want you to know:

You’re not broken — it’s December.

The lead-up to Christmas has a strange way of pulling the energy out of us.
Shorter days.
Dark mornings.
The mental load of the year catching up.
The pressure to “finish strong.”

And the temptation to say…
“Sure look, I’ll start again in January.”

Even as a coach — someone who owns a gym, coaches people every day, and trains for fun — I feel it too.
This week especially.

There’s been a lot going on in the background for me. Business, responsibilities, the usual December chaos… and without fail, when things get heavy, my motivation dips.

But here’s the part I want to share with you — the part that helps me get back on track:

When I start feeling sorry for myself, I go straight back to gratitude.

It’s impossible to feel hopeless and grateful at the same time.
And the quickest way to shift your energy is to remind yourself of what’s good.

For me, that looks like this:

  • Training — even when I don’t want to
  • Walking my dogs
  • Early mornings with my baby daughter
  • Time with Ciara
  • Getting outside, even briefly
  • Showing up for the people I coach

These things fill my cup.
They ground me.
They stop the spiral.

Because if I let the tiredness win, suddenly everything gets harder — my training, my routine, my mindset, my confidence.
But gratitude brings me back.

And here’s something really important:

You don’t have to feel motivated to take a step.

Most people wait for motivation.
They wait for January.
They wait to “feel ready.”

But the truth is:

Action creates motivation — not the other way around.

You take a walk → you feel a bit better.
You do a 20-minute session → you feel more capable.
You show up for one class → you remember why it matters.

That’s how you stop the December slide.

Why December Is the Best Time to Start (Even Though It Doesn’t Feel Like It)

Most people write off this month.
But the ones who don’t
The ones who take even a tiny step…
They go into January with momentum instead of guilt.

At Evolution Gym Tralee, we see it every year.

The person who starts in mid-December always beats the person who waits.

Not because they trained perfectly.
But because they didn’t abandon themselves.

If You’re Feeling the Dip Right Now, Try This:

1. Do one tiny thing today.

Not a workout — a step.
Stretch for 5 minutes.
Walk 10 minutes.
Drink water.

Your brain will thank you.

2. Block one hour this week for yourself.

Write it into your calendar like a meeting.
Protect it.

3. Choose gratitude over overwhelm.

Write down 3 things you’re grateful for.
Yes, even if you’re tired and cranky.
Especially then.

4. Remember: you don’t need to wait for January.

You just need one small start.
