Last week, I spent a few days away in West Cork with my wife, our 6-month-old daughter, and of course, our two doodles.
It wasn’t your typical “sit around and do nothing” kind of break.
We hiked mountains.
We walked through caves and up long sets of steps.
We carried our baby on the beach and through the towns (well, mostly I carried her on my chest in a sling).
And on the Wednesday, my wife and I had a moment of realisation:
👉 This holiday is better because we’re fit, strong, and healthy.
The Difference Fitness Makes
I often hear people I used to hang around with say things like:
- “We just stayed in the apartment really — not much you can do with a baby.”
- “I had two or three drinks and that was me done.”
Almost as if their child is an inconvenience to their lifestyle.
Now don’t get me wrong — in my 20s I was that person. Happy to go out, eat badly, drink too much, and then waste the next day wondering why I did it.
But in my 30s, life looks different. I’m fitter, stronger, happier, and more active. And so is my wife, who is now 6 months post-partum and thriving.
The result? Our trips away are filled with:
✅ Adventures instead of sitting around.
✅ Energy instead of exhaustion.
✅ Memories we’ll always treasure (with a belly full of pizza and bar food too — balance matters!).
Why This Matters
For me, fitness is no longer just about the gym, a race, or the numbers on the barbell.
It’s about being able to carry my daughter across a beach without thinking twice.
It’s about hiking up a mountain and enjoying the view at the top as a family.
It’s about living fully, not sitting things out because I don’t feel capable.
That’s what fitness gives you: the ability to say yes to life.
Your Takeaway
Whether you’re a parent, busy professional, or someone who’s just been “waiting for the right time” to start — remember this:
Fitness doesn’t just change your body.
It changes your quality of life, your confidence, and the memories you get to make.
