Personal Trainer Tralee: Stop Waiting For A Better Week To Start

Members working out on rowers with coach

I’m writing this on a wet Wednesday after the June bank holiday.

Wind and rain outside.

The kind of weather that makes you want to stay inside, drink coffee, and push everything to “next week.”

I’m getting ready to coach classes from 10am to 1pm, and I raced Tri Athy at the weekend, but seeing it come and go has me looking forward to getting back into training today for my next event.

And it got me thinking:

Funny how we always wait for a better week.

A better week to start training.

A better week to eat better.

A better week to get back into routine.

A better week to finally do the thing we’ve been saying we want to do.

But real life doesn’t really work like that.

There is nearly always something.

A bank holiday.
A busy week in work.
Bad weather.
Kids off school.
A few nights out.
A holiday coming up.
A tired body.
A full head.

And if we keep waiting for the perfect week, we can end up waiting months.

Sometimes years. And next thing its too late.

This Is What Starting Actually Looks Like

Starting rarely looks like a perfect Monday morning.

It doesn’t always look like new runners, high motivation, good weather, and a clear diary.

Most of the time, starting looks more like this:

A wet Wednesday.

A messy week.

A head full of excuses.

And one small decision to do something anyway.

That might not sound exciting, but it is usually where progress begins.

Because if you can start when life is normal, busy, and imperfect, you are far more likely to keep going.

The Bank Holiday Trap

After a bank holiday, a lot of people feel like they need to “reset.”

They tell themselves they’ll start fresh next Monday.

But then Monday comes and something else gets in the way.

The truth is, you don’t need a full reset.

You don’t need to make up for the weekend.

You don’t need to punish yourself.

You just need to get moving again.

One session.

One better meal.

One walk.

One small decision that points you back in the direction you want to go.

That’s enough to start building momentum.

Why Now Is Actually A Great Time

This might sound strange, but a week like this is one of the best times to start.

Not because the weather is good.

It’s not.

Not because motivation is high.

It probably isn’t.

But because this is real life.

If you can begin now, you’re not relying on perfect conditions.

You’re learning how to build fitness into your actual week.

That’s what matters.

Anyone can train when everything feels easy.

The real win is building a routine that works when life is busy, weather is poor, and motivation is average.

What To Focus On This Week

If you’re thinking about starting, don’t overcomplicate it.

Start with three things.

First, book two or three training slots into your week. Treat them like appointments, not optional extras. Or if you don’t train right now book a No Sweat Intro Consultation with me.

Second, get a bit more movement in. Even a short walk after dinner can help clear the head and build momentum.

Third, look at your meals and ask one simple question: “Where is my protein?” It doesn’t need to be perfect. Just start making your meals a bit more supportive of your goals.

That’s it.

No dramatic overhaul.

No all-or-nothing plan.

Just a few simple actions that you can repeat.

Where Coaching Helps

This is where working with a coach can make a big difference.

A good coach doesn’t just tell you to “try harder.”

They help you simplify things.

They help you decide what matters this week.

They give you structure when your own head is messy.

That’s why people often make more progress with coaching than they did for years on their own.

Not because they suddenly become a different person.

Because they stop guessing.

Final Thought

Maybe this week isn’t perfect.

Maybe the weather is awful.

Maybe the bank holiday threw your routine off.

Maybe your motivation isn’t sky high.

That’s okay.

You don’t need a better week to start.

You just need to stop waiting for one.

Because real progress is built in real life.

And real life often starts on a wet Wednesday.
