In September 2023, Joanne Houlihan joined Evolution Fitness with a clear purpose: to gain strength, boost her confidence, and prevent recurring back injuries. Flash forward several months, and Joanne’s journey is a testament to what personalised training and a supportive community can achieve. We caught up with Joanne to learn more about her experience and progress since joining Evolution.
A Tailored Start
When Joanne first joined, she opted for personal training that was specifically designed to meet her unique needs. This approach exceeded her expectations and set the foundation for her continued progress:
“Yes, it was exactly what I expected and more. I began with personal training that was tailored just for me, and it made all the difference.”
Building Knowledge and Strength
Since joining Evolution, Joanne has gained not only physical strength but also the confidence to pursue her fitness goals with determination:
“I’ve gained so much knowledge and confidence in what I’m doing. My strength is on the up, and I feel more capable every day.”
A Milestone Achievement
One of Joanne’s proudest accomplishments is completing her first half marathon on her 45th birthday, a goal she achieved through consistent training and dedication:
“Starting run training and completing my first half marathon on my 45th birthday in March was a huge achievement for me.”
Overcoming Challenges
Like any fitness journey, Joanne’s has not been without its challenges. Two months ago, she faced a setback when she re-injured her back at work, raising fears that she might have to stop training. However, with the support of her trainers, she was able to adapt her workouts and continue her progress:
“My biggest challenge was hurting my back again and fearing that I would have to give up training. But we worked around it by adapting the training to my injury, and I’m still moving forward.”
Looking Forward
Joanne’s current focus is on preparing for another half marathon in October. She’s committed to following her program and continuing to build strength in her legs:
“I’m preparing for my next half marathon in October, so I’m sticking to the program and seeing my legs get stronger.”

For anyone considering starting their own fitness journey, Joanne’s advice is simple yet powerful:
“Be kind to yourself. Little steps at a time… we all have to begin somewhere.”

“I love that it’s small groups, with each of us at our own level. There’s plenty of encouragement from all the trainers to progress at a pace that’s specific to each individual. It’s a non-judgmental space.”
